How does the Dutch driving license actually work?
If you're new to the Netherlands, this is the short version. We walk you through it on day one — no surprises.
-
STEP 01
Theory exam (CBR)
Online practice via our Volkswagen Rijbewijs partner, then a 65-question exam at CBR. Available in English. ~€41.
-
STEP 02
Driving lessons
35–40 lessons on average, 60 or 90 min each. Manual or automatic — we recommend automatic if you're short on time.
-
STEP 03
Interim test (TTT)
Halfway through, you take an "interim test" with CBR — a practice run for the real exam. Strongly recommended.
-
STEP 04
Practical exam
~55 minutes of city + highway driving with a CBR examiner. For automatic the exam can be in English. Pass = license.
Note for international students: If you have a non-EU license, you can usually drive in NL for 185 days. After that you need a Dutch license. We help students from UM, MUMC+ and the wider international community make this transition smoothly.

Common questions.
Can I take my driving exam in English?
Yes — for the automatic license. The CBR practical exam can be conducted in English. The theory exam is also available in English. For manual transmission, the practical exam is generally Dutch-only.
Can I exchange my home-country license?
It depends. EU/EEA licenses are easy to exchange. Some non-EU licenses (US, Canada, etc.) can be exchanged under certain conditions; otherwise you need to get a Dutch license. We can advise you in your first lesson.
How many lessons will I need?
The CBR average is 35–40 lessons. With automatic and prior driving experience, you may need fewer. We track your progress on a personal lesson card so you always know where you stand.
Do you pick me up from UM / city center?
Yes — pick-up from home, station Maastricht, or your UM faculty is included.
What does the full process cost?
Lessons + theory exam + practical exam + interim test typically lands around €2,000–€2,500 for the full automatic track. Full transparent pricing here.
